Reno family advocates for opioid alternatives in Nevada Legislature

A Reno mother and son are turning personal pain into statewide change. Lisa Mead, CEO of Reno Orthopedic Clinic, and her son, Gerad Davis—now a certified drug and alcohol counselor—are advocating for safer, non-addictive pain management in Nevada. Their testimony for Senate Bill 337, which would expand access to non-opioid treatments, stems from Davis’s seven-year battle with opioid addiction following a surgery. Together, they’ve co-authored a book, Before There Was An After, to share their journey and inspire hope for recovery.

Reno Orthopedic Center launches program to combat opioid use in post-surgery recovery

In response to the opioid crisis, the Reno Orthopedic Center has launched the Opioid Sparing Care and Recovery (OSCAR) program—a collaborative effort offering surgical patients effective, opioid-free pain management. Led by Dr. Sanjai Shukla and supported by CEO Lisa Mead, the program replaces opioids with safer alternatives like nerve blocks, anti-inflammatories, and anxiety treatments. The initiative aims to prevent addiction before it starts, especially in high-risk procedures like joint replacements. Inspired by Mead’s personal experience with her son’s opioid addiction, OSCAR is redefining recovery and giving patients a safer path to healing.
